As Thailand demotes the citizens' rights, USA is finally respecting them

What a surprise. With news that the Thai ministers have passed the regulation that give greater power to the government to monitor what Thai citizens can and cannot see, with harsh punishments for publishing contents the government deem inappropriate, the Thai government show that it does not respect or value freedom of speech. Meanwhile, the USA that has previously tapped the citizens' phone and obtaining email content without warrant has reversed its course. Perhaps the new Thai constitution should have an untouchable amendments like the US constitution. One of them being the rights of expression.

Assumption University ABAC Poll director Noppadol Kannikar said the survey assessed opinions towards Thailand's political situation and the AEC order freezing assets of the ex-premier and his family members with a random sample of 1,661 persons June 13-14.

The survey showed 80 per cent monitor political news at least once a week. Of this, 16 per cent support the government while 5 per cent do not. The remaining 79 per cent are non-partisan.

Asked which political party they support in the current political situation, 84.7 per cent do not support any party, 9.5 per cent back Thai Rak Thai and 4.4 per cent support the Democrats.

The survey found 97 per cent have monitored news reports on the AEC's freeze on Thaksin and his family's assets while 3 per cent do not.

It showed that well over half -- 56.5 per cent -- support the AEC order, but believe that the committee should more clearly examine sources of funds and allow the case to be investigated fairly.

However, 43.5 per cent disagree, reasoning it might cause divisiveness and believing the funds were obtained honestly.

The poll showed 90 per cent are concerned the assets freeze would lead to a disturbance. Of this, 47.8 per cent view the disturbance would worsen while only 8.4 per cent said it would lessen.

In addition, 54.5 per cent agree that the military and police should jointly operate checkpoints to prevent a widespread demonstration while 10.8 per cent do not.

Asked whether they could accept a declaration of the state of emergency if the demonstrations turn violent, 73.5 per cent said they could while 26.5 per cent could not.

Google and 1984: privacy issues

I suppose my recent blogs have been mostly comparisons between events that happen and literature. So I might as well continue to follow the trend.

With the latest unfolding of the Google Maps Street View, is it possible that we are seeing the trending toward Big Brother from 1984? Or are people being too anxious? Are we losing our privacies?

According to a dictionary definition, privacy means

the state or condition of being free from being observed or disturbed by other people.

Based on this definition, Big Brother is a loss of privacy. But how about Google Maps and other google tools, such as personalized search / news? Considering that google has been storing user information and search tracks, are we at a loss of privacy here? According to the dictionary definition, google search is a violation of privacy. Google Maps, on the other hand, is not a violation of privacy as long as the people do not appear on there or if they are blurred, as suggested by the article below.

How far should the issue of privacy be taken? And how much should we be concerned?

Taken to the extreme, almost anything can be viewed as privacy violation. For example, taking a photo with people you do not know in the photo. In this case, people would view it as being too extreme, and do not view it as a privacy violation. The question that follow then is this: how much is acceptable? The example is acceptable, but when the photo is shared publicly, is it still acceptable? Is it more acceptable for the photos to appear in Flickr or yahoo! photo, than Google Maps even if they are the exact same pictures?

The Frogs Asking for a King

THE FROGS, grieved at having no established Ruler, sent ambassadors to Jupiter entreating for a King. Perceiving their simplicity, he cast down a huge log into the lake. The Frogs were terrified at the splash occasioned by its fall and hid themselves in the depths of the pool. But as soon as they realized that the huge log was motionless, they swam again to the top of the water, dismissed their fears, climbed up, and began squatting on it in contempt. After some time they began to think themselves ill-treated in the appointment of so inert a Ruler, and sent a second deputation to Jupiter to pray that he would set over them another sovereign. He then gave them an Eel to govern them. When the Frogs discovered his easy good nature, they sent yet a third time to Jupiter to beg him to choose for them still another King. Jupiter, displeased with all their complaints, sent a Heron, who preyed upon the Frogs day by day till there were none left to croak upon the lake.

Interesting indeed.

It is true that we wish for the best leader and I wholeheartedly agree. However, no one is ever perfect. By wishing for the perfect leader, it seems like we have stumbled upon our worst fear: the heron.

The progress has been interesting. It would be very interesting in the direction that we are heading.

Day 2: 1 June 2007

• Reported 2-3000 people have been protesting against the junta. Some are Taksin supporters. Others are just against the military period. Although the protesters have been asked to move location by the polic and the military, it had been rather peaceful.
• According to ABAC poll, 91.7% of Bangkokians support the court ruling, and 98% of Bangkokians want things to progress in peace.

There wasn't much going on, and thankfully so that nothing had turned violent as of yet. However, the most pressing thing would be how the result of the ABAC poll got distributed. Of course, one can question the validity of the poll regarding the demographic distribution of the interviewers, but I would leave that out of the question for now.

The problem is this... The result of the poll, at least for Hutch mobile phone users, are distributed by Contact Hutch via SMS, despite the fact that the users did not subscribe to any SMS news service or any kind of notification service. I'm not sure how it is for the users of other mobile companies, but considering that Hutch is owned by CAT, it seems like the government / junta want as any people to know of this particular poll result. Amazing.

It seems like I am staring right into the middle of the government propaganda. Amazing.

Even more amazing is the fact that we don't know whether what we believe is what really believe or what we have been conditioned to believe by the news around us.

The one thing that is most troubling is this: "When the trees fall in the woods, and nobody is there to hear it, then does that tree really fell?"

How much of the world we know is the real truth and how much is the perceived truth?

Scary.

Call yourself an internet addict? Chances are that if you happen to stumble upon this website anyway, you probably are.

There are multiple ways to gain money while being online. Those listed here DO NOT include taking online surveys, clicking on ads, polls, whatever.

So here are ones that I find personally interesting:

ReviewMe - In order to participate, you must have a blog and it has to be active. Companies go to ReviewMe to advertise a product and ReviewMe asks their members to write a review of the product in exchange for cash.

In regards to ethics, ReviewMe mandates that the blogger/site owner indicate that they are being compensated to write the review AND the advertiser cannot insist on a positive review. This is the opposite of other similar services that don't mandate trustworthy behavior. Ultimately the goal is to spread the word honestly.

You can expect to earn $20 - $200 per review that you write.

Vizu - I really like the sound of this one and may try it on Dumb Little Man. Instead of putting ads on your site, you insert polls. You get paid based on the CPM (cost per thousand) that you set. The better positioning on your site, the better you will do. The nice part of this is that everything is embedded into your site allowing visitors to participate without leaving. That is key. PS - I learned about this site today from Digital Inspiration.

Rent-A-Coder: As I type this, there are 2,299 requests on this site. These requests are opportunities for coders to earn money. Take on a project, get it done and get paid. I like this concept because Rent-A-Coders doesn't get paid a thing until you do therefore it is in their best interest to keep you busy.

Associated Content - If you write a story, how-to, rant, etc. you can submit it to them and they will pay you $3-$20 per article if they like it

Blish - Whether you're a company with thousands of digital (downloadable) products, or you've written an ebook or some code, Blish offers you a place to sell that content.

ClicknWork - Get paid $5-$150 per hour for basically doing freelance work on a per-assignment basis. You have to pass a pretty tough test to get in.

Feedburner - Not only are they the best place to house your feeds, they will also add ads to your feed and website. You get paid per impression.

Indeed.com - Add their job board to your site. They then post jobs based on the geographic location of visitors and the position types you pre-select. I tried it and I they continually report that I sent 0 visitors and I know that's not right. Nevertheless, I may have an isolated problem so they make the list.

Shoemoney - This is a blog that can teach you a ton on making money online. I've spent hours reading his old stuff.

Among all these, Feedburner is interesting in that it is now merging with google. We will see how this pan out.

Not a zero sum game

Business is not necessary a zero sum game. Others do not have to lose for you to win, and vice versa.

The perfect example found in the article is the software industry. It's the perfect, yet probably the most unbelievable, with the two software giants, Microsoft and Apple, claiming that they don't need to beat each other out. What's with the PC-Mac guy ads and all the "you have no taste" talk that Apple had launched over the years. And what's with the "need to get into the next generation digital technology" in Zune that Microsoft launched?

Both Microsoft and Apple are the pioneers and probably the two most important entity who made computer what they are today: mass commercial products. With history of them being at each other's grits for decades, as well as their philanthropists, many would be surprised with the claim of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.

However, when you look at the picture, you must really question yourself this: are the two companies really competing at all? Considering that they target totally different markets with different strategies.

Microsoft is the old plain Jane of the software world. Someone whom you won't notice at a prom. Someone who is so bland, yet you see them everywhere. Yes, Microsoft took the generic approach and made themselves a general appliance in every home. Exciting? Perhaps not. But easy to find. That's your plain Jane.

Apple is like the homecoming queen. A girl who always has everyone's attention, yet barely anyone can get her. That had always been Apple's approach starting froom their "1984 rebel-targetting commercial ads" to the iPods generation. Chic. Trendy. Beautiful. For the liberals of the world.

So how can the competition between the companies be a zero-sum game?

And now, the most ironic thing is this: Microsoft helped Apple in launching their Apple II computer, the innovation of the age, decades ago.

พรรคไทยรักไทยเกิดขึ้นหลังรัฐธรรมนูญ ๒๕๔๐ ซึ่งพรรคไม่ได้เป็นผู้ร่าง ผู้ก่อตั้งได้รวมตัวกันในช่วงที่กำลังอยู่ในวิกฤตทางเศรษฐกิจและประชาชนสิ้นหวังกับการแก้ปัญหาเศรษฐกิจของรัฐบาลในขณะนั้น และกำลังเรียกหาผู้นำที่มีความสามารถ

พรรคไทยรักไทยได้จัดทำนโยบายโดยประชาชนมีส่วนร่วม ได้นำเสนอต่อประชาชนจนได้รับชัยชนะในการเลือกตั้ง และได้นำนโยบายที่แถลงมาบริหารประเทศ จนเป็นที่ยอมรับและทำให้ได้รับชัยชนะท่วมท้นในการเลือกตั้งครั้งต่อมา

พรรคไทยรักไทยเป็นพรรคการเมืองพรรคแรกที่จัดตั้งรัฐบาลพรรคเดียวด้วยเสียงเกินกึ่งหนึ่งของสภาผู้แทนราษฎร ทำให้เกิดรัฐบาลที่เข้มแข็ง มีประสิทธิภาพ ซึ่งเป็นผลตามที่ผู้ร่างรัฐธรรมนูญต้องการ

“ต่อมามีคนบางส่วนไม่พอใจ และเสนอให้ล้มรัฐบาลไทยรักไทย โดยวิธีการต่างๆที่ไม่เป็นไปตามครรลองระบอบประชาธิปไตย จนนำไปสู่การรัฐประหารยึดอำนาจ ล้มล้างการปกครองระบอบประชาธิปไตยในที่สุด ทำให้ประเทศไทยต้องกลับสู่สภาพเผด็จการอีกครั้งหนึ่ง”

ขอเรียกร้องต่อประชาชนผู้สนับสนุนพรรคว่า เมื่อเห็นว่าประเทศตกอยู่ในสภาพเช่นนี้แล้ว แม้พรรคต้องประสบปัญหาร้ายแรง ก็เห็นว่าประเทศเสียหายมากกว่า จึงขอให้ทุกคนมีความมุ่งมั่นที่จะแก้ปัญหาของประเทศ ไม่ท้อถอย ขอให้มั่นใจว่าประชาชนทั่วจะสนับสนุนเราต่อไป และขอให้มั่นใจว่าโลกวันนี้ไม่ใช่ยุคของเผด็จการแล้ว สังคมโลกและสังคมไทยไม่ยอมรับและไม่คาดหวังที่จะเห็นประเทศไทยเป็นอย่างปัจจุบัน แต่จะต้องรีบกลับคืนสู่ความเป็นประชาธิปไตยอย่างแน่นอน

พรรคไทยรักไทยไม่มีวันตาย ตราบใดที่ทุกคนยังผนึกกำลังกันอย่างเข้มแข็ง ยึดมั่นในอุดมการณ์และไทยรักไทย ประชาชนที่ประจักษ์ในผลงานของพรรคย่อมโอบอุ้มสนับสนุนพรรคไทยรักไทยต่อไป เพียงแต่ขอให้ชาวไทยรักไทยทุกคนเข้าใจถึงจุดแข็งในข้อนี้ของตัวเองไว้ แล้วมุ่งไปสู่การเลือกตั้ง เพื่อให้ประชาชนได้มีโอกาสแสดงพลังทวงเอารัฐบาลของประชาชนและนโยบายที่ประชาชนชื่นชอบกลับคืนมา พรรคไทยรักไทยก็จะสามารถประสบความสำเร็จได้

สำหรับแนวทางที่จะดำเนินการต่อไปนั้น ได้สรุปผลการหารือแกนนำและอดีตสส.ของพรรคว่า นอกจากการขอให้ประชาชนทุกคนมีขันติธรรม ความอดทนอดกลั้นแล้ว ยังต้องย้ำว่าแนวทางที่จะสู้ต่อไปนี้เป็นแนวทางต่อสู้ในระบอบรัฐสภาที่ยึดมั่นสันติวิธี ไม่ต้องการเผชิญหน้า แตกหักหรือความรุนแรงใดๆ

แกนนำพรรคไทยรักไทยได้กำหนดแนวทางขั้นตอนการดำเนินการดังนี้

(1) จัดตั้งกลุ่มไทยรักไทย โดยคณะที่ทำหน้าที่ผู้บริหารจัดการพรรคมาขออาสาเป็นแกนนำต่อไป มีอดีตสส.ร่วมลงชื่อแล้ว....คน เจตนารมณ์คือยึดมั่นอุดมการณ์นโยบายพรรคไทยรักไทย

(2) เดินหน้าตั้งพรรคการเมือง เฉพาะหน้าเรียกร้องให้ยกเลิกประกาศคปค.ฉบับที่ 15 และ 27 หากตั้งพรรคได้จะใช้ชื่อพรรคไทยรักไทย

(3) เรียกร้องรัฐธรรมนูญที่เป็นประชาธิปไตย ขอให้แก้ไขประเด็นที่ไม่เป็นประชาธิปไตย และหากไม่แก้ ไม่เป็นประชาธิปไตย จะเสนอให้คว่ำรัฐธรรมนูญในขั้นตอนลงประชามติ แล้วเสนอให้คมช.และรัฐบาลนำรัฐธรรมนูญที่ดีมาใช้

(4) ให้มีการเลือกตั้งตามกำหนด และเป็นการเลือกตั้งที่บริสุทธิ์ยุติธรรม อย่ากำหนดผลเลือกตั้งล่วงหน้าอย่างที่ทำอยู่ และขอเรียกร้องให้ทุกฝ่าย โดยเฉพาะคมช.และพันธมิตรของคมช.ยอมรับผลการเลือกตั้ง

(5) เราจะเตรียมพร้อมสำหรับการเลือกตั้ง ด้วยการนำเสนอนโยบายเดิมและนโยบายใหม่ต่อประชาชนและต่อประเทศ เพื่อจะกลับมาเป็นรัฐบาล บริหารประเทศอีกครั้ง

สำหรับดร.ทักษิณ ชินวัตร อดีตหัวหน้าพรรคไทยรักไทย ที่ผ่านมาอยู่ในสภาพที่น่าเห็นใจ ต้องระหกระเหินจากบ้านเกิดเมืองนอน ไม่ได้รับความเป็นธรรมจากการดำเนินคดีและยังถูกโจมตีฝ่ายเดียวอยู่ตลอดเวลา

ชาวไทยรักไทยถือว่า ดร.ทักษิณเป็นผู้ร่วมก่อตั้งพรรค เป็นหัวหน้าพรรคคนแรก และได้ร่วมสร้างนโยบายที่ได้นำไปสู่การใช้ปฏิบัติจนเป็นที่ยอมรับ สร้างผลงานไว้มากมาย แม้ดร.ทักษิณจะวางมือทางการเมืองแล้ว แต่สมาชิกพรรคไทยรักไทยก็จะยืนยันสืบทอดนโยบายพรรคที่ ดร.ทักษิณมีส่วนร่วมสร้างไว้อย่างสำคัญ

หลังการเลือกตั้งที่จะมีขึ้น เราต้องการเห็น ดร.ทักษิณกลับเมืองไทยได้ในฐานะคนไทยคนหนึ่งและในฐานะอดีตนายกรัฐมนตรี ตราบใดที่ยังไม่ได้ถูกพิพากษาถึงที่สุดโดยศาลยุติธรรม ก็ควรได้รับการปฏิบัติอย่างผู้บริสุทธิ์ และควรจะได้รับการคุ้มครองจากรัฐ โดยได้รับการพิจารณาคดีอย่างยุติธรรมจากกระบวนการยุติธรรมที่แท้จริง

พรรคไทยรักไทยเห็นว่า การเลือกตั้งครั้งที่จะถึงนี้ จะไม่ใช่เพียงการใช้สิทธิตามระบอบประชาธิปไตยเท่านั้น แต่จะมีเนื้อหาเป็นการต่อสู้เพื่อประชาธิปไตยอยู่ในตัว คือเป็นการแสดงออกของประชาชนทั่วประเทศว่า ไม่เห็นด้วยกับการรัฐประหารยึดอำนาจ และเป็นการทวงรัฐบาลของประชาชนคืนมา พร้อมกับทวงความเป็นธรรมของคนไทยทุกคนกลับคืนมาด้วย

Jury's Out: Day 1

The count down is no longer negative. This is Day 1.

Now that the court has decided on the direction Thailand is heading, with the Democratic Party being safe in a landslide vote and Thai Rak Thai Party being dissolved, we are about to see a major change in Thailand. How the aftermath will unfold will remain a mystery for the time being, but whatever is going to happen, Thailand will never be the same again.

These are what we have witnessed so far on Day 0:

• That the Thai constitutional court is corrupted, unfair, and unjust. Both the democratic and Thai Rak Thai Party used the same defense, yet the defense is valid in one ruling while invalid in the other.
• Thailand is no longer a FREE country. The word "Thai" from Thailand means freedom, but we have now live in an age when such words are just .... well, words. Well, how can Thailand be a free country, when the medias are surrounded by militaries and the militaries are blocking entrance into the capital city. When was the last time that such an event happen in a free, democratic country? NEVER.
• The Thai Rak Thai Party leader, Jaturon Chaisang, was taken off the TV when he was making a speech regarding the court decision. When was the last time this ever happened in a free, democratic country? NEVER.

When was the last time we ever faced censorship to this extent under any previous democratic Thai leaders? NEVER. Just made me wonder one thing....were we really living under censorship throughout the time under Taksin? Or are we about to learn what being censored is all about?

Which leads to Day 1.

The most pressing issues right now would be....

Does the court have the authority to dissolve the Thai Rak Thai Party? Considering that this court is created and appointed by the military (not by the constitution), and had not been officially appointed by the king? What does this imply? It's like saying that the military says the Thai Rak Thai Party violates the law. Thus, making the ruling invalid.

And.... the scenarios that are about to unfold in front of us... do they include violence? Bloodshed? Peace? Turmoil? Election? Fake democracy?

Shall Thailand be forever be trapped in vicious cycles of democracy and coup for eternity, or shall we see the end of military intervention once and for all?

The jury's out. This is day 1.

Historic day

I suppose today, May 30th 2007, may remain one of the historic days in Thai history. Today may possibly serve as the turning point of the Thailand with the result of the court ruling regarding the dissolvation of two major polical parties: Thai Rak Thai and Democratic party.

The consequences of such decision are imminent, and perhaps will change the face of Thailand drastically. If the court suggests the dissolvation of Thai Rak Thai, or both parties, what we are about to see is possibly the end of democracy as we know it. Thailand has a very brief history of democracy, and not even a full democracy, but it is still one. Without the two major parties, we will be seeing collection of smaller parties that are not respected or accepted by the majority of Thai people. Such power vacuum would only give rise more military involvement than before. It remains true that we are about to have a new constitution, but remember, this particular consitution is supported by the MILITARY who OVERTHREW the DEMOCRACTICALLY-ELECTED government. Anything that gives room for the military to intervene, even in times of peril, would only lead to long term loss of democracy and rise of dictatorship. What is peril? Were we really in a state of peril when the September 19th coup was staged? To some, yes. To many, no. The peril, or the so-called peril, at that time was considered "peril" because there are people who do not respect the voice of the majority. Of course, it is the minority who had always changed and shaped this world. It is true that the majority is not always correct. But in the course of democracy, if we choose to have democracy at all, this is a rule we must play by.

We either choose to respect the opinion of the majority or not at all. We cannot choose the time and place to respect or not to respect it.

Make your choice. Democracy or none.

So much for the freedom of speech

Well, yeah..... so Taksin was called the anti-freedom-of-expression guy back when the Thai marines took him out of office. What was the promise of the marines leader? Bringing back democracy and the freedom of speech.

The one thing the people of all races and nations must remember is this: military interference can never result in true democracy.

If you would like another popular example, you might as well start looking at Iraq and what happen to it in the aftermath of the Iraq invasion. But that is the topic best left for the other days.

Since when is the provider responsible for the content? Oh since now. So I suppose CAT and TOT board of directors should turn themselves in to the junta because they, afterall, allow the pro-democracy people to operate at all. Should the phone operator be responble for what the content over the telephone? The only difference is that the phone is a private communication tool, while the internet is public. Anyhow, with the censorship policy in mind, CAT and TOT should go ahead and block all foreign news such as Reuter considering that the article below actually got published. It surely would make the junta looks bad.

Of course, the junta cannot do that. Had they been that smart, the economy would have plummetted even more.

Just a bit of comments here and there.... The success of the missile defense test just provide another doom and gloom to the world community as a whole. One of these days, deterrent from nuclear first strike will cease to exist, thus possibly escalating the nuclear armaments of nuclear-capable countries. Scary.

Will you sell AIS?

From a business point of view, that is a definite YES for me.

Why? Because AIS is going nowhere but downhill at that point in time.

Ever heard of the phrase "Sell high and buy low?" That is the point that AIS is reaching; the very peak and it's starting to flat out. Of course AIS is the #1 telecommunication operator at the end of 2005 with the majority market share. However, the trend did not look good for AIS. With the midyear acquisition of DTAC by a Norwegian company and the merger of TRUE and UBC officially released in December 2005, the future of AIS was anything but bright.

At that point in time, the future of the telecommunication industry was no longer 2G or GSM, the most current technology employed. Its future was 3G. It was forecasted that the 3G license was to be granted at the latest the 3rd quarter of 2006, therefore 3G was coming, and fast. The problem was that AIS did not gain any advantages from this knowledge. For the the past years, AIS held the most market share because it had the best infrastructure and was the first in the market. The fact that it had the best licensing deal (again, because it was the first one in the market) and being first in the market significantly help its infrastructure. The revenue and profit from the investment could be put into the infrastructure, resulting in an increase in the customer base and increase in profit, resulting in further investment, and so on. The playing field was never leveled.

However, the coming of 3G was about to flatten the once thought mountainous playing field. 3G requires reinvestment in the infrastructure. Thus, whoever has more to invest is likely to win the 3G game. With the Norwegian acquisition of DTAC, the company was primed to compete in the new 3G arena. It had investments that AIS did not have. The merger of TRUE and UBC was their "blue ocean strategy." Instead of bidding in a price war or a 3G investment war, TRUE opted for content instead. Their "Triple Play" strategy tie their internet service, land line, mobile phone, and content together. This integration and TRUE's tendency to go toward WIMAX instead of 3G clearly show that TRUE is carving out a new market segment of its own, which give the company its own competitive advantage and a clear direction of its future.

Clearly, AIS was lacking behind the other two major telecommunication players. DTAC's advantage was its potential power to invest. TRUE's advantage was its integration strategy and content. The reinvestment in the 3G technology cannot guarantee that AIS would continue to be the market leader, considering that everyone is starting over from scratch, and the biggest spender who finished the infrastructure overhaul first would be the favorite for the new market leader. Over the long term of 3-5 years, AIS may no longer hold the majority market segment. So, why should AIS reinvest? Because their only other choice is to reinvent.

What do they do? Reinvest, reinvent, or die?

AIS has tried to reinvent itself corporate-wise. The NWO project was a great idea that failed. Technology-wise, push mail and other corporate strategy was a good idea, but not one that would put them ahead of others in the industry. They havn't had an industry-shaking move for a very long time. They did not need to before, but they need it now. The problem was, that did not happen or maybe could not happen.

Whatever the reason was, their only other choice is to reinvest. However, competing against the financial investment of a foreign company would most likely be the last thing on its mind, considering the playing field and other situations.

If I own AIS, I would definitely sell it to the highest bidder because

• AIS may not want to reinvest
• DTAC has foreign backing
• TRUE has content advantage
• AIS may no longer be the market leader in 3-5 year time period.

So why should I not sell AIS when the profit is highest?

I would be most stupid if I don't sell.

Possible terrorist attack on Feb 23rd, 2007

The Australian Government is warning tourists of a possible terrorist attack in Thailand.

The latest travel warning for the area says there are reports of a potential bomb attack in crowded places in Bangkok some time today.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it has received reports that terrorists could be planning attacks at places such as department stores and sky-train and subway stations.

There is uncertainty over the political situation in Thailand after the military coup in September last year.

Who is more wrong?

Just for destroying one man, another man is willing to leave 60 million people to tragic ends.

So, who is more wrong? The first or the second man?

SNOWDON: The Head of the Thai army, coup leader and political king maker, General Sonthi wants to get Thailand's satellites back.

They're the assets of the Shin Corporation satellite subsidiary.

They were sold off last year to the Singapore government's investment company Temasek as part of a controversial multi-billion dollar sale by the Thaksin family.

General Sonthi says the satellites are national assets and should be returned to Thailand.

Managing Director of Hong Kong based Political and Economic Risk Consultancy, Robert Broadfoot.

BROADFOOT: So that's why it's even more important because the comments are by the military which has put the government in place.

SNOWDON: Singapore's Foreign Affairs Ministry has issued a statement which says:
"Singapore is surprised at what Council for National Security Chief Sonthi Boonyaratglin was reported to have said about getting back Thai national assets which have been sold to foreigners. We should wait for the Thai Government to clarify what those remarks mean."

Singapore issued a similar statement in January when General Sonthi said it was possible that Singapore's ownership of the communication satellites could compromise Thai security by having them spy on military phone conversations.

Relations between the two countries turned more frosty when Mr Thaksin met with the Deputy Prime Minister during a visit to Singapore.

Robert Broadfoot believes the bilateral relationship will survive, and the bigger implications lie in business and investor sentiment - for both countries.

BROADFOOT: There's certainly going to be a strain in relations, but I think that the Singapore government in particular is going to be able to manage it. I think the Thai government also wants to manage it, but it's going to have negative fall-out for both sides.

SNOWDON: Do you think this is just an issue of national pride, could there be real security issues involved in his thinking?

BROADFOOT: Well I don't know what his thinking is, but I don't think that there are any real security issues involved. I think the main motivation now is against former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. The military junta wants two things, to neutralise Mr Thaksin so he cannot make a political comeback, and secondly they want to tie his hands financially as much as possible so that he cannot finance future politicians and become a power behind the throne. So to the extent that if the government can somehow tie up or even pressure Temasek into going after Thaksin to say listen, we want our money back, that potentially ties Mr Thaksin's hands. So I think keep in mind all of these moves by the Thai government are really designed against former prime minister Thaksin. And that in itself is a concern because it seems like they're so focussed on this one issue that they're making a number of other mistakes with the economy which are hurting foreign investor confidence.

SNOWDON: Such as?

BROADFOOT: Such as changing the way that they honour intellectual property for pharmeuceuticals, such as putting on the capital controls last December and scaring the 'beejeezus' out of investors in the stockmarket there. And now the way that they're going after the so-called nominees, which is going to affect the large number of foreign investors in the country.

SNOWDON: Because that's what irritated a lot of Thai people wasn't it, the use of nominees, some people called them proxies in the Shin Corp sale to Temasek?

BROADFOOT: They would like to use the Temasek deal as a way to tie Mr Thaksin into corruption. So they could have him barred from politics among other things. It's going to be awfully difficult to prove in a Thai court, which raises the next question of through this crisis will the integrity of the Thai court system be maintained or will it be compromised?

Cutting the last straw

The government and the coup leader has now made a new ruling that cuts the last straw and practically unofficially labels him as a traitor: banning any news on Taksin on any media in Thailand. Any violation will result in immediate pulling of that program.

What is this implying?

Basically, we are seeing a replay of what had happened to Thailand in the past. Taksin isn't the first prime minister to be in exile. The previously exiled high profile people remained in exile for the rest of their lives. And as the past have shown, it is only after their death that they are not deemed traitors: but rather victims of dictatorship and of the military. Those two are Pridi Pranomyong and Puay Ungpakorn. Why were they exiled in the first place? You should try to find that out for yourself.

History usually repeats itself. This isn't only true for Thailand but for every country. We have seen various wars wage because of the exact same reason. We see people act on others for the exact same resons. We have seen wars lost because of the exact same reason, e.g. never ever invade Russia in the summer because your soldiers will always freeze to death in the winter, yet that is the mistake that practically every militarist did.

Based on the actions the coup leader and the government employed so far, it seems that they are insisting on keeping Taksin in exile. They forbid him from returning to Thailand. They forbid news of Taksin and anyone who is on his side. What we are seeing here is the process of cutting someone's arms and legs. Of course, Taksin can simply take his wealth and brain and never return to Thailand. But is that fair? Not to mention, what he was accused of was not necessarily true. I shall cover that in later blogs. Besides, right or wrong the government is cutting him off from defending himself. Not to mention, they are prosecuting him without letting him say anything about what they are accusing.

Right or wrong, this government is not democratic. It is a militarist; a dictatorship. Its actions so far has shown nothing but that. If history rings true, I'm afraid we will be seeing a power vacuum among the military in the near future, before a return to permanent military state if we are not careful. The intent of this blog is not to predict the future however, but to heed caution to the readers to be careful and to watch what happen with a clearer view. Idleness only lead to power corruption. However, violence only leads to more violence. So halt it. We shall see how the future is about to unfold.

Fear

What is one's greatest fear?

Although we all think we fear death, but for most us, fear of death is most likely beyond us. Of course deep inside we may fear it, but because we are never close enough to it, it had never really mattered all that much.

But death is generous. Maybe a little too generous lately.

During New Year Eve of 2007, Thailand found itself stuck in a power struggle. Who knows who the opposition is. Nevertheless, that is not the point of this particular post. On that particular day, eight bombs were placed in Bangkok. Not only was this unforeseen, but an act of this multitude had never been on displayed in Bangkok. Of course there were shootings on the street, coup de tat, and bomb threat, but never before had a bomb been set without prior warnings. Well, I guess that's at least what I can remember, which is probably within the past 20 years.

For the first time in a very long time, living in Bangkok is like living in southern Thailand. There are people who fear death and fear going out to public places. There are also people who just go out anyway. Maybe they aren't afraid. Maybe they are, but simply concluded that had they were destined to die, they would have die anyway; they don't need to get stuck in a bomb explosion to die, they can die from a toothpick getting stuck in their throat if they were destined to die.

How does it feel to fear death? For me, the new year episode and my road trip have provided me an interesting insight into this particular fear. It was rather interesting actually. You are facing a real fear and that one particular misstep can result in you getting in deep trouble. It opens up a new dimension to your perception and senses.

Still, it is not funny to know that going out can mean getting into trouble physically. What would one choose? Live a careful, sedentary life in fear of death? Will you live a "carpe diem" style where "Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die today" is the motto? Or rather a middle ground somewhere in between? Or is there no easy middle ground in circumstances such as what we are seeing that is about to unfold in the near future?

New Year Eve bombing conspiracy

What if things as we know it is not true?
What if the truth is really a lie?
What is white is really black?
What if goodness is really evil?
What if the culprit is innocent?
What if the innocent is the culprit?

To put things into perspective, what if the government initiate the bombing?

This would serve as a very interesting conspiracy. What would the government gain from this?

1. A diversion from its current land scandal
2. A diversion from its current miliatary spending scandal
3. Destroy everything that is left from the old government
4. Destroy credibility of everyone from the previous government
5. Subdue its rivals
6. Allow the current government to prolong the state of emergency and put military on the street of Bangkok
7. Allow the government to put more funding into the miliary, thus its own pocket

When you think about it, the government is the beneficiary of all that is happening. Funny isn't it?
